This article has been written again and again to answer all the questions that come to us, this time the question is quite unique which has been asked and has even become a debate for many people over the years, “Were David and Jonathan in a same-sex (LGBT) relationship ?

This question refers to the passage where David said this about Jonathan :

2 Samuel 1:26 (ESV) I was troubled because of you, my brother Jonathan, you were very kind to me; For me, your love is more magical than a woman’s love.

Of course, this text cannot be used as proof that David and Jonathan had a relationship or love like LGBT , because in this text it is clear that David clearly states what the relationship between him and Jonathan was like. David called Jonathan his brother, not his lover.

1 Samuel 20:40-41 (ESV) After that Jonathan gave his weapon to the slave who was with him, and said to him, “Go, take it to the city.” So the slave went home, and David appeared from beside the rock; he prostrated himself with his face to the ground and worshiped three times. They kissed and cried. Finally David was able to restrain himself.

This verse cannot also be used as a reference that David and Jonathan had same-sex love because this verse records the moment of forced separation between David and Jonathan because David had to save his life from Saul who wanted to kill him.

1 Samuel 18:1 (ESV) When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan’s soul joined David’s soul; and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

Even this verse cannot be used as a reference that David and Jonathan fell in love and blossomed as other people have misunderstood all this time, this verse tells the story of brotherly love (Philia) where Jonathan was amazed by David who had the same courage as him on the battlefield. , that’s why Jonathan respected David so much that he gave David his robe, armor and belt.

1 Samuel 18:3-4 (ESV) Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, as well as his armor, including his sword, bow and belt.

In the text it is clearly written “Jonathan loved David as he loved himself. “That is Philia’s love, the love that the Lord JESUS once taught to his disciples and the people of Israel. So none of these verses indicate that David and Jonathan were gay and were in a same-sex relationship. This is clearly an inconsequential statement and has no basis at all.

Moreover, David and Jonathan were heterosexual and they had children and wives. David even took care of and adopted Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth after Jonathan died because David remembered his promise and his oath to Jonathan.
